Lately I’ve grown
as thin as gin or ink.
Waiting for spring to lift
me, I have tried to cut
the threads of my constraint.
Thick as a clot,
he informs me that
he is my county jail shackle;
that I cannot
leave with the breeze.
I must,
must, must, must
see out my life sentence
for crimes against the parish.
He says all this and then returns
to drawing;
freedom flowing from the end
of his pencil,
while I close my eyes
to flight.
