6th December 2010

sheen of ice and the jagged
pavement’s edge       down to a town made ragged
jaded      mired by sewer stink
I should make yesterday
into now      make today
its echo   time from clay
ice remains      coating day
but here there is only the negative world gone white
and away from that view is one of stretched clean sheets
draped over a bed for dusk      a covering for what passes
as the ebbing of time    now light    now dark   now blanketed
I wrote in an email that it was all about focus
like when too close you fail to see her tears
and pulling away see only her body     pale and exposed and ready for sleep
in truth she becomes that covered world and I ignore what melting ice might later reveal.
