19th October 2010

By Mark Brayley | 2010 October 19

In fours and fives they came,
great thundering beasts with hooves pounding new rhythms
into the soft clay.
I sat, solemn on a stone,
and let them pass.
Fleetingly, I held them –
an image in my palm –
allowing myself to marvel
at their strength, at their beauty.
Only to allow them to disappear,
back into the ether from whence they came;
so fixed was I on my stone.
I look now and again
the way they disappeared,
in the hope that I can catch a glimpse
or hear their beating hooves
but all I see are ghosts in fractal wisps of mist.
Kicking at the mire, I fail
to grasp the reins of what passes by.
The moments lost.
