11th October 2010

By Melissa Lee-Houghton | 2010 October 11

I would like to think that it’s ok,
to be less, to be uncertain.
This screen and the sky are the same colour and I’m
not sure whether to write that pretty letter
when I don’t forgive you by a shot,
even though I made a false start
when I thought I had. I tried.
Now I think of all the possessions
you trashed and smashed and all the
stealing of beds, and dirty linen.
I care about you once a month
when I’m more opaque.
Sometimes I care so much I have to go
for a walk and I have to
remember. I trusted you last Autumn,
walking through old haunts and making conversation
about the trees and our parents.
I really gave a shit about you.
Today, the sky is melting all over us and planes
dive through it like it’s warm butter.
