The Small Things

On the train, you overhear,
as London approaches through dreer
rain, above the electric euphony;

“If I won the lottery, I’d buy a castle.”
“If I won, I’d spend my time
building my own supercomputer.”
“Nah, if I won…”

Except you won’t win, times are tough
and you’d do well to prepare
for making do and taking pleasure in
the small things.

There’s chaos abroad, widely.
Vertiginous and legion is despair.
Just get to where you’re going, and be
happy with that. Accidents happen anywhere.
